SAMR Spring Lecture Series, Dr. Jessica L. Lamont, April 21st at 3pm EST
Cursing in Sanctuaries of the Mediterranean: From Sicily to North Africa to Greece.
This talk considers the presence of ritualized cursing — especially the "magical" creation and deposition of curse tablets — in three Mediterranean sanctuaries located at Selinous (Sicily), Cyrene (Libya), and Corinth (Greece). In showing how curse-writing might regularly unfold in sacred spaces, this talk demonstrates how ritual could render magic and religion inseparable in Greek and Roman antiquity.
All sessions will be held at this Zoom address.
